The Cambodian Government Vows to Ensure the Safety of All Children Everywhere

PHNOM PENH: Prime Minister Hun Sen has announced that Cambodia intends to continue its active efforts to ensure the safety of children everywhere, and ensure a conducive and nurturing environment for growth and protection. He made this announcement at the online “Together to #ENDviolence Leaders’ Event 2022" on Tuesday night, 14 June.

Joining through teleconference to attend the “Together to #ENDviolence Leaders’ Event 2022," Prime Minister Hun Sen said that as a member of the Global Partnership to End Violence Against Children, the Royal Government of Cambodia has always paid great attention to preventing all forms of violence against children and promoting child protection. He added that in 2021, based on the evaluation of the Action Plan to Prevent and Respond to Violence against Children in 2017-2021, Cambodia has been on the right path to preventing violence against children.

"As a way forward, Cambodia will continue to be more active in ensuring that children are safe everywhere, at home, in school, and in the community," said Prime Minister Hun Sen. "In addition, the Royal Government is firmly committed to ensuring that all children live in an environment conducive to growth and with access to nurturing and protection aimed at ending violence against children in all forms and achieving Cambodia's commitment to the regional and global framework through the implementation of national plans and policies.”

In order to achieve an end to violence against children, Cambodia has prepared and implemented a series of policies and plans, such as the Action Plan to Prevent and Respond to Violence Against Children 2017-2021, the Cambodian National Social Protection Policy Framework 2016 -2025 and the National Child Protection System Policy 2019-2029.

In 2019, Cambodia became a member of the Global Partnership to End Violence Against Children, prioritizing the implementation of alternative child care policies by promoting family-based care instead of child care centers.

At the online Leaders' Event, Prime Minister Hun Sen also made a number of recommendations, promoting the spirit of unity, strengthening and expanding existing cooperation, promoting child welfare and child protection, especially strengthening coordination mechanisms among all actors, to share important information and data to take timely and strict action against all forms of violence against children.

He stressed that there must be a global commitment through the mobilization of both financial and non-financial resources to support and ensure the sustainability of the movement to end violence against children within the frameworks of the United Nations, international organizations and other regions, and to accelerate progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially Goal 16.2: to end abuse, exploitation, trafficking and all forms of violence against and torture of children.
